Magherafelt

Magherafelt << MA huh rah FEHLT >> is a market town in central Northern Ireland. It lies northwest of Lough Neagh (Lake Neagh). Magherafelt is an economic, educational, and social center for the region, including nearby farms and villages. The area surrounding the town has beautiful scenery, and many fishing enthusiasts fish in its rivers, especially for trout and salmon. Agriculture is an important economic activity in the area.

Magherafelt is in County Londonderry (also called County Derry), one of the six historic counties of Northern Ireland. The county ceased to serve as an administrative area in 1973, when a reorganization of local government divided it into smaller districts. From 1973 to 2015, Magherafelt was the name of a district council area, a kind of local government district. In 2015, the Magherafelt district was combined with the Cookstown district and most of the Dungannon and South Tyrone district. Together, they formed the Mid Ulster district.
