Magnitogorsk

Magnitogorsk << mag NEET uh gawrsk >> (pop. 410,594) is Russia’s leading steel center. It is in the Ural Mountains in southwestern Russia. The city was named for nearby deposits of magnetite, a type of iron ore. The local ore has been exhausted, but steel production continues, using imported ore. Magnitogorsk was founded in 1931.
