Maine, University of, is a coeducational, state-supported system of higher education. The official name of the system is the University of Maine System.
The system has campuses in Augusta, Farmington, Fort Kent, Machias, Orono, Portland, and Presque Isle. The largest campus is at Orono. The Augusta campus grants mostly associate’s degrees. The Farmington, Fort Kent, Machias, and Presque Isle campuses offer bachelor’s degrees. The Portland campus is called the University of Southern Maine. The first campus was founded at Farmington in 1864. The University of Maine System was formed in 1968.
