Manchester, Greater (pop. 2,867,765), is a metropolitan county in northwestern England. Greater Manchester is administered by 10 metropolitan districts, including the cities of Manchester and Salford, and the metropolitan boroughs of Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, and Wigan.
Greater Manchester was governed by a metropolitan county council from 1974 to 1986, when such councils were abolished. Most of the council’s powers were distributed to metropolitan districts within the area. The Greater Manchester Combined Authority, formed in 2011, coordinates transportation, planning, and economic development among the metropolitan districts.
