Mauna Kea, << MOW nuh KAY uh, >> is a volcano on the island of Hawaii. Its peak rises 13,796 feet (4,205 meters) above sea level. It is the site of a number of large telescopes. The W. M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea has two identical telescopes that are among the largest optical telescopes in the world.
The name Mauna Kea means white mountain.
