Maurer, Ion Gheorghe, << MOW rur, yon gay AWR gay >> (1902-2000), served as prime minister of Romania from 1961 until he resigned in 1974. He was a member of the Presidium, the Romanian Communist Party’s chief executive body, from 1965 to 1974.
Maurer was born in Bucharest and earned a law degree at Bucharest University. During the 1930’s, he served as defense attorney for Communists in various trials. Maurer joined the party in 1936. In 1945, he was named undersecretary for communications. From 1948 to 1955, Maurer was director of the Institute for Juridical Research of the Academy of Sciences. He became vice president of the National Assembly in 1957 and minister for foreign affairs in 1958.
