McGwire, Mark (1963-…), is a former professional baseball player. A powerful right-handed hitter, McGwire played 16 Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons with the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals from 1986 through 2001. McGwire hit 583 career home runs, the 11th most in MLB history, but performance-enhancing drug (PED) use tarnished his career. He was a 12-time All-Star and led his league in home runs four times, including a then-MLB record 70 in 1998. Despite these achievements, McGwire has received little support for entering the National Baseball Hall of Fame .
Mark David McGwire was born on Oct. 1, 1963, in Pomona, California . He attended the University of Southern California and was named national college player of the year in 1984. That same year, he played for the United States Olympic baseball team and then joined the minor league system of the Athletics. He made his MLB debut for Oakland in August 1986. In 1987, his first full season, he led the American League (AL) in home runs (49) and was named AL Rookie of the Year. McGwire was traded to St. Louis during the 1997 season, and he retired after the 2001 season. Since then, McGwire has served as a coach with several MLB teams. In 2010, he admitted to using PED’s during a large portion of his playing career.
