McKell, Sir William (1891-1985), was governor general of Australia from 1947 to 1953. He was premier and treasurer of New South Wales from 1941 to 1947. In 1948, he was appointed a privy counsellor (see Privy Council). McKell was born on Sept. 26, 1891, in Pambula, New South Wales, Australia. He left school at the age of 13 to become an apprentice boilermaker. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as a Labor Party candidate in 1917. He was minister of justice from 1925 to 1927. McKell died on Jan. 11, 1985.
