Median

Median, << MEE dee uhn, >> in statistics, is the middle value in a group of numbers arranged in numerical order. Suppose five students receive test scores of 62, 84, 99, 77, and 88. To find the median of these scores, arrange them in numerical order: 62, 77, 84, 88, and 99. The number in the middle, 84, is the median. If the number of values is even, there will be no middle number. In such instances, the median is the average of the two middle values. For example, if another student received a score of 94, the median would be 86—the average of 84 and 88. For any set of values, the number of values that are higher than the median will equal the number of values that are lower than the median.
