Mercurochrome is the trade name for a weak antiseptic that is used in a water solution. The generic name is merbromin. Mercurochrome is one of a group of antiseptics, called organic mercurials, that contain mercury. Mercurochrome is a coarse, green powder, but in a water solution it is a deep red. Mercurochrome solutions normally do not burn or irritate when applied to wounds.
