Mersey, << MUR zee, >> River, is an important trade waterway in northwest England. The river rises in mountains called the Pennines, flows southwest past Runcorn, and enters the Irish Sea near Liverpool. The Mersey is about 70 miles (110 kilometers) long.
Docks, terminals, and warehouses extend along the estuary (mouth) of the Mersey near Liverpool. On the south bank, many dock areas have been converted into shops, museums, and housing. Tunnels under the river connect Liverpool and the Wirral peninsula. The Manchester Ship Canal allows large ships to travel from the Mersey estuary to Manchester.
