Michigan State University is a state-supported coeducational school in East Lansing, Michigan. It is one of the largest single-campus institutions of higher education in the United States. The school was founded in 1855 as Michigan Agricultural College. It served as a model for the land-grant colleges and universities founded later in the United States. Land-grant colleges and universities receive federal aid to support education. The university was the first state school to offer courses in agriculture for credit. It took its present name in 1964.
