Milhous, << MIHL hows, >> Katherine (1894-1977), was an American author and illustrator of children’s books. She came from a Pennsylvania Dutch background, which influenced her work. Milhous won the 1951 Caldecott Medal for her illustrations for The Egg Tree (1950), a picture book she wrote about Pennsylvania Dutch Easter customs. Milhous also wrote and illustrated such picture books as Lovina: A Story of the Pennsylvania Country (1940), Patrick and the Golden Slippers (1951), Appolonia’s Valentine (1954), and Through These Arches: The Story of Independence Hall (1964). She also illustrated a number of books written by children’s authors Alice Dalgliesh and Mabel Leigh Hunt.
Milhous was born on Nov. 27, 1894, in Philadelphia. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She died on Dec. 5, 1977.
