Mills, Freddie

Mills, Freddie (1919-1965), a British professional boxer, was world light heavyweight champion from 1948 to 1950. Mills won the world title in July 1948, with a points win over Gus Lesnevich of the United States. In 1950, Mills lost his championship after being knocked out by the American boxer Joey Maxim. Mills retired from boxing and later became a popular television personality and owner of a London nightclub. He committed suicide on July 25, 1965.

Frederick Percival Mills was born on June 26, 1919, in Parkstone, near Bournemouth, Dorset. He began boxing at the age of 14 with a traveling fair. Mills won his first professional fight in 1936. He had a career record of 75 victories (including 46 by knockout), 17 defeats, and 5 draws.
