Mohawk Trail

Mohawk Trail was a route westward along the Mohawk River from the Hudson River to the Great Lakes. The Iroquois confederacy, a league of Native American tribes that included the Mohawk, occupied the land it crossed. In pioneer days, thousands of settlers traveled westward along this route. Its importance declined after the building of the Erie Canal in 1825. A railroad and a modern highway now follow the course of the trail.
