Monroe, Harriet (1860-1936), was an American poet and editor. She founded Poetry: A Magazine of Verse in Chicago in 1912 and served as its editor until her death. Her magazine helped initiate and develop modern American poetry. Although Monroe became famous chiefly as an editor, she also wrote poetry, including You and I (1914) and The Difference (1924). Her autobiography, A Poet’s Life: Seventy Years in a Changing World, was published in 1938, after her death. Monroe was born in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 23, 1860. She died on Sept. 26, 1936.
