Montpelier, << mont PEEL yuhr >> (pop. 8,074), is the capital of Vermont. It stands along the Winooski River in the central part of the state.

The life insurance industry and the state government employ many of the city’s people. Other industries include printing and the manufacture of plastics, machinery, and stone-finishing and sawmill equipment.
Montpelier has the smallest population of any state capital in the United States. Chartered in 1780, Montpelier became a city in 1895. It has a council-manager government.
