Montreal, University of, or Université de Montreal, is a private, coeducational university in Montreal, Quebec. All courses are taught in French. The University of Montreal was founded in 1878. The university was controlled by the Roman Catholic Church until 1967, when it became nondenominational. The faculty of continuing education conducts evening and summer courses.
Research is conducted in all fields of study, especially in the medical, natural, physical, and social sciences. The university includes the Polytechnic School, or École Polytechnique; and a business school, the École des Hautes Études Commerciales, often called HEC Montréal.
