Moore, Bobby

Moore, Bobby (1941-1993), was a star English soccer player. He won fame as captain of the England side that won the 1966 FIFA World Cup tournament. FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football). FIFA is soccer’s world governing body. A defender, Moore was renowned for his calm control on the field and his ability to predict his opponents’ movements. Robert Frederick Chelsea Moore was born on April 12, 1941, in Barking, Essex . He joined West Ham, a London soccer club, in 1958. Moore led West Ham to victory in the 1964 FA Cup final and the 1965 European Cup Winners’ Cup. He played 108 matches for England and captained the team in the 1966 and 1970 World Cup tournaments. Moore joined Fulham soccer club in London in 1974, and he later played in the United States . He retired in 1978 to pursue a career as a coach and manager. Moore died of cancer on Feb. 24, 1993.
