Morrill, Justin Smith

Morrill, Justin Smith (1810-1898), was a United States political leader. He represented Vermont in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1855 to 1867, and in the U.S. Senate from 1867 to 1898. He proposed the Morrill Act of 1862, which established land-grant colleges and universities (see Land-grant university ). He introduced the Morrill Tariff Act of 1861. He also helped found the Republican Party and helped pass legislation that established the present Library of Congress. Morrill was born in Strafford, Vermont on April 14, 1810. He died on Dec. 28, 1898
