Mount Carmel is a mountain that extends 13 miles (21 kilometers) in northwestern Israel from the Esdraelon Valley to the south coast of the Bay of Haifa. Mount Carmel rises 1,791 feet (546 meters) above sea level. The port city of Haifa lies on and around the mountain. The Roman Catholic religious order called the Carmelites originated in the 1100’s with a group of men living on Mount Carmel.
