Mount Makalu, << MUH kuh `loo` >>, is one of the highest mountains in the world. Makalu stands in the Himalaya about 10 miles (16 kilometers) southeast of Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and Tibet. The mountain’s highest peak, Makalu I, rises 27,824 feet (8,481 meters). Makalu II is 25,130 feet (7,660 meters) high. In 1955, a group of French mountaineers led by Jean Franco became the first people to climb Makalu.
