Mount Sinai, << SY ny, >> is the mountain on which Moses received the Decalogue (Ten Commandments) and learned much of the Hebraic law. Mount Sinai is also called Horeb in the Bible. Its name in Arabic is Jabal Musa (Mount of Moses). Mount Sinai is located in Egypt in the district of the Sinai Peninsula, a triangle between the two north arms of the Red Sea. For the past 1,500 years, scholars have considered Mount Sinai to be an 8,000-foot (2,400-meter) peak in the southern tip of the triangle. Today, many experts think it may be in the peninsula’s northeastern part.
