Mugwumps

Mugwumps were influential Republicans who refused to support their party’s presidential candidate, James G. Blaine, in 1884. The Mugwumps, who supported government reform, did not trust Blaine and believed he opposed reform. They worked for the Democratic candidate, Grover Cleveland. In the election, Cleveland narrowly defeated Blaine. See also Cleveland, Grover (Election of 1884) .
