National Honor Society is an organization for high school students. Members are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. College scholarships are awarded each year to top-ranking senior members. The society is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which founded it in 1921. In 1929, the National Junior Honor Society was founded for students in middle-level schools. Both the senior society and the junior society have headquarters in Reston, Virginia.
