Near East is a name given to a region that includes a part of Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the eastern boundary of Iran, plus part of northeastern Africa. The British and French first called this region the Near East because it lay nearer to London and Paris than the Far East lay. Today, this region is usually called the Middle East (see Middle East).
