Nebraska, University of, is a public university. Its main campus is the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Other campuses include the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK), the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), and the Omaha-based University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). The Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis is also part of the University of Nebraska.
The University of Nebraska was chartered as a land-grant college in 1869. Land-grant colleges and universities receive federal aid to support education. The college held its first classes in 1871, in Lincoln. The current university system was established in 1968 by merging the University of Nebraska and the municipal University of Omaha and by creating a separate medical center. Kearney State College became the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1991. The University of Nebraska is known as a strong research institution. It maintains agricultural research centers across the state. The University of Nebraska offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees.
