Nefertiti, << `nehf` uhr TEE tee, >> was an ancient Egyptian queen, the wife of Akhenaten, a pharaoh (king) who ruled from about 1353 to 1336 B.C. Akhenaten was the first pharaoh to preach a form of monotheism (belief in one god). Nefertiti was a firm supporter of her husband’s teachings and assisted him in the new religious ceremonies. Akhenaten founded a new capital, Akhetaten (present-day Amarna). The reign of Akhenaten and Nefertiti is called the Amarna Revolution because of the many changes they made in art, religion, and social practices.
Nefertiti and Akhenaten had six daughters. One of them, Ankhesenamun, married King Tutankhamun.
