Nevada System of Higher Education is the public system of higher education for Nevada. The system operates universities at Reno and Las Vegas, a state college, four community colleges, and an environmental research institute.
The University of Nevada, Reno, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, grant bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees. Nevada State College is in Henderson. The College of Southern Nevada, Great Basin College, Truckee Meadows Community College, and Western Nevada College offer degrees at a number of campuses and satellite centers. These four community colleges are based in the Las Vegas area, in Elko, in Reno, and in Carson City, respectively. The Desert Research Institute studies atmospheric and water resources as well as other environmental concerns. It has facilities in Boulder City, Las Vegas, and Reno. The institute also operates the Storm Peak Laboratory in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
The Nevada Board of Regents, which operates the system, was formed in 1865. However, the Nevada System of Higher Education was not created until 1968.
