New Brunswick

New Brunswick, New Jersey (pop. 55,266), is an educational and industrial center. It lies on the Raritan River in the north-central part of the state. The city produces clothing, machinery, medical supplies, and pharmaceuticals. New Brunswick is located in the New York (New York)-Newark-Jersey City metropolitan area. In World War II (1939-1945), nearby Camp Kilmer processed thousands of soldiers sent to Europe.

New Brunswick is the home of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; the New Brunswick Theological Seminary; and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. The town became a transportation center early in its history. The Raritan River was part of the land-water route from New York City to Philadelphia. New Brunswick was chartered in 1730. In the late 1900’s, the city completed a number of projects in the downtown area. The new construction included office buildings, a hotel and conference center, a cultural center, shopping facilities, and an automobile bridge over the Raritan River. New Brunswick has a mayor-council form of government. The city is the seat of Middlesex County.
