New Ireland is the second largest of the more than 200 islands of the Bismarck Archipelago, which forms part of the nation of Papua New Guinea. Only New Britain is larger than New Ireland in the island group. New Ireland is about 230 miles (370 kilometers) long and covers about 3,340 square miles (8,651 square kilometers) in the southwest Pacific. It has about 232,000 people. Mountains cover much of the island, and coral reefs surround it.
