New Mexico, University of

New Mexico, University of, is a public school of higher education. The university’s flagship campus is in Albuquerque, New Mexico. An additional campus near Albuquerque, in Rio Rancho, is called UNM West. Branch campuses of the University of New Mexico are in Gallup, Los Alamos, Taos, and Valencia County. The university’s athletic teams are called the Lobos.

The university’s Maxwell Museum of Anthropology contains a major collection of objects made by the Ancestral Pueblo (once called the Anasazi), who were ancestors of the Pueblo Indians. In addition, the Albuquerque campus has museums of biology, geology, and meteoritics; art galleries; and a large concert hall, Popejoy Hall. The University of New Mexico was founded in 1889.
