Nicholson, Jack (1937-…), is an American motion-picture actor and director. He often plays a cocky, rude outsider or free-spirited individualist who rejects conventional society. Nicholson has won three Academy Awards. He won the 1975 best actor award for One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and the 1997 award for As Good As It Gets. He won the 1983 award as best supporting actor for Terms of Endearment.
Nicholson was born in Neptune, New Jersey, on April 22, 1937. He made his film debut in The Cry Baby Killer (1958) and first gained recognition in Easy Rider (1969). His other motion pictures include Five Easy Pieces (1970), Carnal Knowledge (1971), The Last Detail (1973), Chinatown (1974), The Shining (1980), Reds (1981), Prizzi’s Honor (1985), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Batman (1989), Wolf (1994), The Pledge (2001), About Schmidt (2002), Something’s Gotta Give (2003), The Departed (2006), The Bucket List (2007), and How Do You Know (2010). Nicholson has also directed films, beginning with Drive, He Said (1971).
