Oliphant, << OL ih fuhnt, >> Patrick Bruce (1935-…), is a well-known editorial cartoonist. The figures in his cartoons have very exaggerated features, and his work is more biting than that of most other editorial cartoonists. Most Oliphant cartoons include Punk the Penguin, a character that usually comments on the action in the drawings. Oliphant won the Pulitzer Prize for cartooning in 1967.
Oliphant was born on July 24, 1935, in Adelaide, Australia. In 1955, he became the editorial cartoonist of The Advertiser, the Adelaide newspaper. He came to the United States in 1964 to join the Denver Post as editorial cartoonist. From 1975 to 1981, he worked on The Washington Star. Universal Press Syndicate distributes Oliphant’s cartoons to about 500 newspapers. Many collections of his work have been published, including The Oliphant Book (1969), Four More Years (1973), Oliphant’s Presidents (1990), and Leadership (2007).
