Pelican flower is a vine of tropical North America and South America. The vine has pointed, heart-shaped leaves. The flower consists of a large greenish-yellow tube that starts downward and bends up, forming a U. At the end of the tube, the edges flare out in the shape of a shield. The shield may be 12 inches (30 centimeters) wide. It has purple veins and spots and usually ends in a “tail” that may extend 3 feet (91 centimeters).
