Peloponnesus, << PEHL uh puh `nee` suhs, >> is the name of the southern peninsula of Greece. It is linked to the mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth. Peloponnesus means island of Pelops. Pelops was a figure in Greek mythology. In ancient times, the Peloponnesus consisted of six divisions: Achaea, Arcadia, Argolis, Elis, Laconia, and Messenia. In medieval times it was known as Morea.
