Penn, John

Penn, John (1740-1788), a North Carolina delegate to the Continental Congress from 1775 to 1780, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. When Penn was 21, he received a license to practice law. He practiced successfully for about 12 years in Virginia. In 1774, he moved to North Carolina, where he became a Revolutionary leader and served as a member of the provincial congress. He returned to his law practice after the American Revolution. Penn was born on May 6, 1740, in Caroline County, Virginia. He died on Sept. 14, 1788.
