Pennines, << PEH nynz, >> are a long line of uplands in northern England. Also known as the Pennine Chain or the Pennine Hills, they run through the central part of England like a backbone, starting in Northumberland Unitary Authority and Cumbria County and extending south to Derbyshire and Staffordshire. The highest point is Cross Fell, which has an elevation of 2,930 feet (893 meters). The Pennines are rich in minerals, especially coal and lead. They form an important recreational area and contain two national parks—Peak District National Park and Yorkshire Dales National Park.
