Pennsylvania State University is a land-grant institution that offers advanced education at more than 20 locations in Pennsylvania. A land-grant institution is partly endowed by the United States government under the Morrill, or Land-Grant, Act of 1862. The university, popularly known as Penn State, grants associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees. Penn State is a major research university. Its athletic teams are called the Nittany Lions.
Penn State’s main campus is University Park, part of the borough of State College, Pennsylvania. Penn State also has campuses in Abington, Altoona, Center Valley (near Allentown), DuBois, Dunmore, Erie, Hazleton, Lehman (near Wilkes-Barre), McKeesport, Media, Middletown (near Harrisburg), Monaca, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Reading, Schuylkill Haven, Sharon, Uniontown, and York. In addition, the university has a law school with locations in University Park and Carlisle, a college of medicine in Hershey, and a school of graduate professional studies in Malvern.
