Peter II

Peter II (1923-1970) became king of Yugoslavia in 1934 when his father, King Alexander I , was assassinated. During Peter’s childhood, Alexander’s cousin Prince Paul served as regent. In March 1941, during World War II (1939-1945), the Yugoslav army overthrew Paul, and Peter took the throne. That April, the German army invaded Yugoslavia, and Peter fled the country. He later set up a government in exile in London . Communists gained control of Yugoslavia and ended the monarchy in 1945. Peter remained in London and later lived in the United States . Peter was born on Sept. 6, 1923, in Belgrade , the Yugoslav capital. He died on Nov. 3, 1970, in Denver , Colorado .
