Pirie, Gordon (1931-1991), was one of the United Kingdom’s outstanding distance runners during the 1950’s. He broke many running records, including several world records, but ran disappointingly in important international championships. He broke the world 6-mile record in 1953. In 1956, he broke the 3,000-meter record twice as well as the 5,000-meter record. He finished second in the Olympic Games 5,000-meter race in 1956. Douglas Alistair Gordon Pirie was born on Feb. 10, 1931, in Leeds, West Yorkshire. He died on Dec. 7, 1991.
