Portal, Lord (1893-1971), Charles Frederick Algernon Portal, was commander-in-chief of the Royal Air Force’s Bomber Command in 1940. He was chief of the British Air Staff from 1940 to 1945. Portal was born on May 21, 1893, at Hungerford, in Berkshire, England, and educated at Winchester College and Oxford University. He served with distinction in the armed forces during World War I (1914-1918). Later, he became an instructor at the Imperial Defence College. King George VI made him Baron Portal of Hungerford in 1945 and Viscount Portal of Hungerford in 1946. Lord Portal served as controller of atomic energy at the Ministry of Supply from 1946 to 1951. He died on April 22, 1971.
