Powder River rises in the southern foothills of the Bighorn Mountains in central Wyoming. It flows 486 miles (782 kilometers) southeast and joins the Yellowstone River near Terry, Montana. Its main tributaries include the Little Powder River in Wyoming and Montana, and Crazy Woman Creek in Wyoming. The sluggish, muddy, shallow river is put to little use.
