Pravda (Truth) was the official newspaper of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union until the Communists lost control of the Soviet government in 1991. Pravda was established in 1912, in St. Petersburg, where V. I. Lenin was one of its chief contributors (see Lenin, V. I. ). Joseph Stalin also worked briefly as an editor of Pravda. At its peak, the newspaper was one of the most widely circulated in the world. Pravda ceased publication in 1996.
