Quarles, Benjamin Arthur

Quarles, << kwawrlz, >> Benjamin Arthur (1904-1996), was an African American historian. He wrote many books about African Americans and their role in United States history. His books include Frederick Douglass (1948), The Negro in the Civil War (1953), The Negro in the American Revolution (1961), and The Negro in the Making of America (1964). Quarles was born on Jan. 23, 1904, in Boston. He became professor of history at Dillard University in 1939 and was dean of Dillard from 1946 to 1953. He served as head of the department of history at Morgan State College from 1953 to 1974. He died on Nov. 16, 1996.
