Radford, Arthur William (1896-1973), an admiral in the United States Navy, served from 1953 to 1957 as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Radford was born on Feb. 27, 1896, in Chicago. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1916 and served during World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945). Radford won recognition as an expert on naval aviation and aircraft-carrier warfare. He was commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet from 1949 to 1953. Radford died in Bethesda, Maryland, on Aug. 17, 1973.
