Ramp, or wild leek, is a wild onion that grows in moist woodland areas in the eastern United States. The flat leaves grow from the ground in spring and disappear by summer. Then a leafless flowering stem appears, bearing several greenish-white flowers at its tip. The plant smells and tastes like onions. Some people believe that the Indian word checagou, from which the city of Chicago got its name, refers to the smell of the ramp.
