Rangers are specialized U.S. Army infantry units. They get much tougher training than other infantrymen. The Rangers were organized in 1942, during World War II, under Colonel William O. Darby. The first regiment of 2,000 men was formed in the United Kingdom. It consisted of volunteers from the American Commando School. About 9 out of 10 of the first regiment lost their lives opening up enemy defenses before invasions.
A group called Rogers’s Rangers fought with the British and American armies during the French and Indian wars of the 1750’s. They developed stealthy, daredevil tactics that have since been associated with the name ranger.
