Ransome, Arthur (1884-1967), was a British author and journalist. Ransome became best known for his series of children’s outdoor adventure novels. The first book, Swallows and Amazons (1931), is a classic story about a group of young people camping and sailing. Ransome wrote 11 other novels in the series, ending with Great Northern? (1947).
Arthur Mitchell Ransome was born on Jan. 18, 1884, in Leeds, England. He became a free-lance writer of articles and stories at the age of 17. He went to Russia in 1913 and stayed as a correspondent for English newspapers until 1919. Ransome wrote books about Russia and fishing in addition to his children’s books. He died on June 3, 1967. The Autobiography of Arthur Ransome was published in 1976.
