Redstart is the name of several species of small woodland birds. The American redstart breeds throughout most of North America. The male is black with vivid salmon-red or orange-red markings. The female and young are brown with dull yellow markings. The female lays four or five creamy white eggs. The bird feeds chiefly on insects. The painted redstart breeds from the southwestern part of the United States to Central America. The male is black, with a bright red breast and white marks on the wings and tail. The female usually lays three or four eggs.
